Master thesis or internship at the SNP&SEQ Technology platform

As a part of the National Genomics Infrastructure (NGI) at the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab,, the SNP&SEQ Technology Platform in Uppsala provides SNPgenotyping and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology to academic researchers in and outside of Sweden ( Next generation sequencing instruments at the platform include the Illumina MiSeq, HiSeq2500, and HiSeqX machines.

Have a burning interest in visualization?

Do you like building beautiful as well as functional things? Do you want to be a part of the genomics revolution? We are looking for a highly motivated individual to develop a web frontend to our quality control database. This task can be carried out either as a 5 month internship or as a master thesis project depending on the wishes of the candidate.

As a successful candidate you’ll be joining a creative team of bioinformaticians and system developers that develop solutions for handling the petabyte scale data generated by our sequencing instruments.

The goal of the project is to provide a dynamic interface where longitudinal quality control data can be queried, visualized and exported. This will include reimplementing a number of features currently available in a working prototype, as well as expanding into new functionality.

  • Excellent webfrontend development skills, working with HTML, CSS and Javascript
  • Basic backend development skills, preferably working with Python or Scala
  • Basic knowledge of SQL
  • Basic proficiency in working in a Linux environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

The SNP&SEQ Technology platform is looking for a person with a high degree of selfmotivation, attention to detail, sense of responsibility, and ability to work both independently and in a team. Emphasis will be put on personal qualities such as a positive attitude and ability to cooperate.

Other merits

  • Previous experience working with Javascript chartlibraries such as d3.js
  • Documented experience in working with opensource projects
  • Experience working with version control (especially git)
  • Experience in software testing
  • Experience from working with largescale data

Knowledge in molecular biology and sequencing technologies is not required but could be regarded as a merit. Proficiency in Swedish is desired, but not required.

Include a cover letter explaining why you want to apply for the position, your curriculum vitae and any other information that might be of interest, such as portfolios and github repositories.
