Air pollution is one of the most important environmental challenges faced in the last decades, since it has dangerous effects on human health and environment. Among others, one of the most important sources for air pollution is the emission of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) from industrial plants. Already at low concentrations, the emitted compounds are very toxic and, together with the nitrogen oxides, are responsible for the formation of ozone and smog at ground level. Photochemistry is one of the most innovative and green solution for the purification of the emissions but it still has many aspects that need to be investigated.
This master thesis work focuses on testing the performance of a full scale UV reactor in field applications. Based on the results from previous research campaigns, a prototype reactor was designed and built. This new concept needs to be tested in different scenarios to evaluate the performance, compared with the previous reactors. An important part of the thesis is the comparison of the field with the lab results in order to understand the most important variables governing the scale-up of the system.

The core work of the project is experimental, in various field campaigns, with the following preliminary steps:
1. Literature survey on UV reactions, VOCs emissions and reactor design
2. Planning of the field campaigns, analyzing the conditions and variables for the tests
3. Field campaigns
4. Analysis of the results, in relation with the previous reactors and the lab results
5. Thesis writing and preparation for the final presentation

- Chemical Engineering background or equivalent
- Great teamwork skills as well as the ability of working independently
- Good command of English, both written and oral
