Beskrivning

The increasing use of drives, battery storage and other power electronics makes industrial grids more dependent on converters. Weak grid connections can increase control interactions and oscillations, while stability assessments still rely on manual, case-specific studies. This thesis at ABB investigates AI-assisted automation of model preparation, scenario testing and result interpretation, with the aim of identifying control strategies that maintain grid stability.

The assignment

  • Build a reference library covering relevant standards, engineering guidelines, simulation models and technical reports.
  • Create scripts to automate frequency- and time-domain stability studies and test different dispatch and load profiles.
  • Develop an AI-assisted stability assessment framework with a MATLAB/Simulink interface.
  • Identify optimal control strategies that preserve stability margins under changing operating conditions.

Who we are looking for

  • An electrical engineering background and a strong interest in power grids.
  • Knowledge of control systems and motivation to apply AI to engineering challenges.
  • Strong programming abilities in MATLAB/Simulink and Python.
  • Familiarity with GitHub Copilot.

What we offer

  • Carry out the thesis at ABB Corporate Research.
  • Receive thesis supervision from Debargha Brahma and Stefan Thorburn.
