Beskrivning

Mine hoists are essential to underground production, lifting loads of up to 70 tonnes at 18 m/s from depths of 1,500 metres. Future high-payload systems are planned for depths exceeding 2,000 metres. This thesis at ABB investigates next-generation mine hoists through computational fluid dynamics, aiming to lower energy consumption and environmental impact.

The assignment

  • Investigate CFD methods for modelling airflow and skip motion in mine hoists.
  • Simulate operating scenarios to assess airflow changes in the shaft and their effects on skips during hoisting.
  • Expand and improve the existing simulation environment.
  • Assess and develop simplified models suitable for advanced control.

Who we are looking for

  • Master’s student in mechanical engineering, engineering physics or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics simulations.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and knowledge of automatic control are advantageous.

What we offer

  • A thesis project at ABB Corporate Research focused on next-generation mine hoist technology.
  • Thesis supervision, with Rickard Lindkvist as the contact for technical scope and expectations.

Practical details

Location: ABB Corporate Research in Västerås. Scope: 30 ECTS for one student. Planned period: January–June 2027; the stated duration is five months.
