Beskrivning
Electrifying process heat in food and beverage plants can place new demands on their internal power distribution networks. This thesis at ABB examines the effects of replacing fossil-fuelled steam boilers with electric boilers or heat pumps. It will explore how thermal storage and flexible demand can limit infrastructure upgrades while meeting production needs.
The assignment
- Build a simplified process model covering batch production and cleaning-in-place (CIP), and connect it to a model of the plant’s electrical network.
- Compare electrification configurations under flexible and inflexible operating conditions.
- Evaluate voltage variations, transformer and cable loading, harmonics and other power-quality effects.
- Identify potential protection and network upgrades, and assess how thermal storage and demand response could reduce their necessity.
Who we are looking for
- Students with a strong foundation in energy engineering and an academic background in electrical engineering, power systems or energy engineering.
- Good programming skills in Python or MATLAB and experience using power-system analysis software such as Pandapower or PowerFactory.
- Strong analytical ability and an interest in connecting industrial process models with electrical network models.
- Motivation to address practical industrial electrification challenges through modelling and simulation.
What we offer
- Thesis supervision by Moksadur Rahman at ABB.
