Beskrivning

Discrete Event Simulation (DES) helps engineers understand and improve industrial systems, but preparing data, building models and checking their accuracy can be time-consuming. This thesis at AFRY explores how AI can support simulation engineers and make model development more efficient, reliable and accessible.

The assignment

  • Review research on AI in simulation engineering and examine modeling workflows to identify activities that could benefit from AI assistance.
  • Define use cases for translating requirements into models, generating model logic and scenarios, and supporting verification and validation.
  • Design and implement one or more proof-of-concept tools using suitable AI technologies, including opportunities to automate repetitive modeling work.
  • Test the proposed solutions through practical case studies and assess efficiency, quality, usability and industrial value, including limitations and risks.
  • Produce a documented thesis report and demonstrate the results to the simulation team, with recommendations and best practices for future AI-assisted workflows.

Who we are looking for

  • Two master’s students in Production Engineering, Systems, Control and Mechatronics, Supply Chain Management or a related field.
  • Completion of at least one simulation course with good grades.
  • Strong theoretical understanding, practical experience and an interest in production systems and/or production logistics.
  • Fluency in Swedish and English.
  • An interest in consulting is an advantage.

What we offer

  • An opportunity to explore AI-assisted simulation development in an industrial engineering setting at AFRY.
  • A thesis based at AFRY’s Gothenburg office, with results presented to its simulation team.

Practical details

Location: AFRY’s office in Gothenburg. Timing: spring semester 2027. Number of students: two; include both students’ CVs in the application. Applications are assessed as they arrive.
