Beskrivning

Axis Communications is investigating the use of 3D sensors for fixed surveillance applications, such as traffic junctions and perimeter monitoring. Turning raw measurements into automated alarm decisions requires methods that distinguish relevant objects from the static surroundings and classify them accurately. This thesis will focus on a selected challenge in that analytics pipeline, aiming to improve performance while keeping computation feasible for embedded hardware.

The assignment

  • Review research in the chosen problem area to identify benchmarks and promising approaches.
  • Develop and investigate methods for a specific part of the 3D sensor analytics pipeline.
  • Explore ways to lower computational demands under embedded hardware constraints.
  • Measure performance using synthetic and real sensor data, and assess results qualitatively using real sensor recordings.
  • Describe the methods, development work and findings in a thesis report.

Who we are looking for

  • Students nearing completion of a master's degree in Engineering Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics or a related subject.
  • Strong analytical skills and an interest in machine learning, computer vision or applied statistics.
  • Foundational knowledge of machine learning, computer vision and statistics, plus programming experience in Python and/or C/C++.
  • Familiarity with processing 3D data and an interest in algorithms designed around practical constraints.
  • Ability to tackle open-ended research, make independent design choices and collaborate with a thesis partner and the Axis team.
  • Experience with Rust, 3D sensors, embedded systems or simulation environments for 3D sensor data is advantageous.
  • Applicants must be affiliated with a Swedish university or university college, either directly or through an exchange programme.

What we offer

  • An opportunity to investigate 3D surveillance analytics in collaboration with the Axis team.
  • A friendly, open working culture centred on collaboration, new ideas and continued skills development.

Practical details

Location: Lund. The project is intended for two students, with each completing a 30-credit master's thesis. Apply through the thesis advert by 27 November 2026; applications may be written in Swedish or English. Apply as a pair, submitting separate applications that clearly name the other applicant. Include a CV and university grade summary. Questions: Katja Palmkvist, katja.palmkvist@axis.com.

Förkunskapskrav

Applicants should be in the final stage of a relevant master's programme and affiliated with a Swedish university or university college, directly or through an exchange programme. The desired background includes machine learning, computer vision, statistics, Python and/or C/C++ programming, and familiarity with 3D data processing. Independent research and design skills, analytical ability and collaborative working are important. Rust, 3D sensor or embedded systems knowledge, and experience with 3D sensor simulation environments are additional merits.
