Beskrivning
Axis Communications offers a master's thesis exploring video bitrate control or objective quality assessment for surveillance applications. Five proposed directions address motion prediction, weather information, analytics performance, temporal changes and network transmission. The final topic is agreed with the supervisor or manager.
The assignment
- Select and develop one of five proposed research directions together with the supervisor or manager.
- Motion-aware bitrate control: assess whether motion indicators available ahead of encoding can improve bitrate regulation, including comparisons of data sources and prediction horizons.
- Capability-based video quality: develop and evaluate a metric based on how compression affects object detection, classification, recognition and identification, accounting for lighting, distance and potentially false detections.
- Weather-aware bitrate control: investigate whether current and forecast weather information can improve bitrate allocation for long-term video storage. Developing the weather estimation system need not be included.
- Temporal video quality: design and test a metric that measures how well changes between frames survive compression.
- Network transmission quality: investigate a combined measure of degradation caused by bitrate adaptation, packet loss and latency, considering how these effects should be weighted.
Who we are looking for
- Master's students in electrical engineering, computer engineering, engineering physics, mathematics or a related discipline.
- Affiliation with a Swedish university or university college, either directly or through an exchange programme.
- Relevant knowledge depends on the selected topic: efficient C programming, C/Python, automatic control, mathematical statistics, algorithms and data structures, or communication systems and internet protocols.
- Two students applying as a pair.
What we offer
- An opportunity to agree on the final research topic with a supervisor or manager.
- A friendly, open and collaborative company culture with an emphasis on developing skills and ways of working.
Practical details
Location: Lund. Scope: two master's students, with 30 credits per student. Apply through the thesis advert by 27 November 2026; applications may be written in Swedish or English. Submit separate applications and identify your thesis partner in each application. Attach a CV and university grade summary. Questions: Magnus Söderdahl, magnus.soderdahl@axis.com.
Förkunskapskrav
Applicants must be affiliated with a Swedish university or university college, directly or through an exchange programme. Relevant study backgrounds include electrical engineering, computer engineering, engineering physics and mathematics. Depending on the topic, relevant coursework includes efficient C programming, automatic control, algorithms and data structures, mathematical statistics, C/Python, communication systems and networks, or internet protocols. For the capability-based quality topic, C/Python is useful rather than explicitly required.
