Beskrivning
Wind interference in microphone recordings can make speech hard to follow, while digital noise suppression may distort voices or introduce audible artifacts. This thesis at Axis Communications explores how to evaluate wind-noise reduction for two-way speech communication. The aim is to build an evaluation framework that combines complementary quality measures with an overall score reflecting listeners’ experience.
The assignment
- Review objective methods for measuring speech quality and noise-reduction performance.
- Determine which quality dimensions matter when assessing wind suppression in two-way conversations.
- Develop separate evaluation scores and a combined metric for comparing wind-noise reduction approaches.
- Collect or record speech under different wind conditions and assess recordings after processing.
- Compare the framework’s results with subjective listening assessments.
- Test whether the framework can distinguish successful wind reduction from speech degradation and processing artifacts.
Who we are looking for
- Master’s students in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related discipline.
- A strong interest in audio technology, acoustics, and signal processing.
- Affiliation with a Swedish university or university college, including through an exchange programme.
- A pair of students applying together.
What we offer
- An open, friendly working culture that emphasises collaboration and encourages new ideas.
