Beskrivning
Hydraulic rock drill development relies on system simulations to study overall behaviour and CFD to examine flow inside individual components. This thesis at Epiroc will develop and assess a co-simulation framework linking Hopsan with ANSYS Fluent. The goal is to improve predictions of hydraulic components and transient system behaviour without making computational demands impractical.
The assignment
- Review published approaches to co-simulation and coupling between simulation tools.
- Build a representative rock drill subsystem model in Hopsan and a detailed ANSYS Fluent model of a selected hydraulic component.
- Implement an interface connecting the two simulation environments and demonstrate their combined operation.
- Assess numerical stability, accuracy and computational performance, including comparisons with conventional system simulations.
- Identify where detailed CFD adds value to system-level analysis and propose guidelines for future industrial use at Epiroc.
Who we are looking for
- Master’s students in mechanical engineering, engineering physics, applied mechanics, fluid mechanics, mechatronics or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, numerical simulation, CFD, programming or dynamic system modelling is beneficial.
- Experience using Hopsan, ANSYS Fluent, Modelica, MATLAB or Python is an advantage.
- An analytical, curious and organised approach, with an interest in tackling demanding engineering problems together with industry.
What we offer
- Collaboration with experienced colleagues in an environment that encourages ideas and continued learning.
- An opportunity to contribute to simulation-driven product development for safer, more productive and more sustainable mining and construction.
- Scope that can be adapted to the students’ backgrounds and interests.
Practical details
Master’s thesis for two students in Örebro, starting in spring 2027. Apply through the recruitment system with a CV and a brief personal letter explaining your interest; create a profile if needed. Applications are assessed on a rolling basis, and the project may be filled before the deadline of 8 November 2026. Applications by email are not accepted.
Förkunskapskrav
Relevant educational backgrounds include mechanical engineering, engineering physics, applied mechanics, fluid mechanics and mechatronics. Knowledge in fluid mechanics, hydraulics, numerical simulation, CFD, programming or dynamic system modelling is beneficial, as is experience with Hopsan, ANSYS Fluent, Modelica, MATLAB or Python. Candidates should be analytical, curious and organised, and interested in industry collaboration.
