Beskrivning
Growing satellite deployments and proposals to process data in space raise questions about emissions, energy demand and material consumption. Recovering orbital infrastructure and handling its end of life present particular challenges for resource circularity. This thesis at Ericsson will use comparative life-cycle assessment (LCA) to examine the environmental impacts of satellite and terrestrial communication systems.
The assignment
- Compare terrestrial and satellite communications globally, covering infrastructure both on the ground and in orbit.
- Gather data on energy consumption, greenhouse-gas emissions, material efficiency and resource depletion risks.
- Design an LCA methodology using scientific literature, interviews with stakeholders inside and outside Ericsson, and independent research.
- Produce a quantitative comparison of the environmental impacts of terrestrial and satellite solutions under present-day conditions.
- Assess how material needs, energy consumption and greenhouse-gas emissions could develop over the coming 10–20 years.
Who we are looking for
- Master’s student at a technical university with a principal focus on sustainability, LCA and circularity.
- Analytical and inquisitive, with an openness to different perspectives.
- Fluent in spoken and written English.
- Interested in interdisciplinary research connecting technology and business.
- Knowledge of or experience in the satellite and space sector is an advantage.
What we offer
- An opportunity to apply technical skills and creativity to challenging problems alongside a team of innovators.
- A collaborative environment in which to explore new solutions.
