The value of flexibility in the Swedish grid - A Socio-economic analysis
The integration of grid-scale battery storage systems in the Swedish grid has grown rapidly in the last few years. The need for flexible resources to balance the grid frequency is one of the main drivers for this development. Internationally, the trend of emerging battery systems for grid support has been ongoing for quite a while, predominantly driven by the decarbonisation of the energy mix. There are several examples of use cases of grid-scale batteries, frequency support being only one of them. Another use case for large scale battery systems is to boost the power transmission in the grid, the batteries are able to increase the available power and can also be used as an alternative to rebuild or upgrade grid component (e.g. cables). A recent Sweco report showed that the Swedish grid is in need of vast investments, around 890-945 BSEK in between 2021 and 2045.It is therefore of interest to examine how installation of grid-scale battery storage can be used to decrease the investment costs in infrastructure. This thesis is aimed at examining which cases a grid upgrade can be replaced by flexibility/battery storage and to analyze the socio-economical benefits it could lead to.
