At Getinge, our passion is to secure that every person and community have access to the best possible care, offering hospitals and life science institutions products and solutions that aim to improve clinical results and optimize workflows. Everyday we collaborate to make a true difference for our customers – and to save more lives. All our employees make a real difference everyday. Are you looking for an inspiring environment for your degree project? You just found it.
Background:
Our Solna site is in an exciting and intensive phase of change and we are now looking for you who would like to execute your thesis project in our Innovation and Technology department, the group consist of 10 employees experienced in a variety of fields. Getinge is a company that among other things develops and maintains several generations of intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP). An IABP is a device that helps the heart by making it less demanding to pump blood and by increasing the heart’s own blood supply. It is typically used on patients with acute heart failure in hospital settings. An intra-aortic balloon is inserted into the aorta and connected to the IABP with a catheter. The balloon is then inflated and deflated in synchrony with the heart beats by triggering on measured electrocardiogram (ECG).
The assignment:
When working with development of complex technical systems, it is very valuable to be able to simulate the behavior of the system in a time- and cost-efficient manner, which enables exploring different "what if" scenarios, for example
• What happens if a component is removed or replaced with another?
• What requirements do this component need to fulfill to meet a desired overall system performance?
• What is the impact if this component fails?
A model like this can also be used for simulation of system behavior during software development and system testing and is very useful throughout the full lifetime of the system, from early design, risk analysis, to product maintenance.
The purpose of the proposed thesis work is to take a first step towards a complete model of the pneumatic system of the IABP. The work can preferably be divided into different steps implementing one sub system at a time, see picture. In-house data can be used for model validation.
Activities:
• Literature study, what has been done before
• Get familiarity with SimScape, the modelling tool
• Model development of the pneumatical system (potentially control system as well)
• Verification of the developed model
• Create a simplified patient model
The work will take place in the Getinge facilities in Solna in close collaboration with the engineering research team, at the Getinge facilities in Röntgenvägen 2, Solna.
Your qualifications:
• Eligible for starting master thesis work within science and engineering (Civilingenjör)
• Basic fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
• Mathematical modelling and numerical methods
• Matlab/Simulink
• Control system design / Mechatronics
Why should you apply?
